Expression through Music
Pandemic or not, music is a main source of comfort for a lot of us. The Autry staff and program attendees of L.A. Poets in Place: Sounds created a COVID-19 playlist, a list of songs to tune out the anxiety or discomfort they were feeling or tune in to more positive feelings. The crowd-sourced playlist made by a group of people is a musical journey through time, types of music and tastes.
Choose one, two, or all the following activities to complete:
- Analyze. Choose a song from the Autry staff-created playlist (scroll to the bottom of the blog). Complete the Autry Object Analysis Activity.
- Describe. Write a journal entry about “What music/songs represent COVID-19?” Include answers to the following questions in your journal entry: What songs express your emotions during the pandemic? What songs uplifted you or connected you to friends? What songs were about the pandemic and the world at the time? What songs would be at a post-pandemic party – what is the DJ going to play?
- Create. Make music that represents your feelings during COVID-19. It can be just with instruments, voice, or both. Record the audio or video and write a label for the music using the Autry Label Writing handout for grades 6-12.
- Make a playlist for the pandemic (limit to 7 songs). It can be a playlist that expresses your emotions, is meant to uplift you, represents the community and the world or more. Write a label for your playlist using the Autry Label Writing handout for grades 6-12.
If you would like to share your work, please submit it to the Autry's Collecting Community History Initiative: The West During COVID-19
We will be highlighting some of these different objects, images, and experiences on our blog, The Autry Files. In the case of photographs of physical objects, please note that—at some point in the future—we may get in touch with you to see if you would be interested in donating the objects to our collections!
